Applications are now open for the 2026/2027 Chinese Government Scholarship. This scholarship is organized by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in South Africa together with the China Scholarship Council (CSC). It is a great opportunity for South Africans who want to study in China for free.
The main aim of this programme is to strengthen the relationship between China and South Africa and help young people gain global exposure.
The DHET has already finished the first screening, and now Stage 2 is open. Applicants must submit their information on the Chinese Government Scholarship website and/or directly to the Chinese universities they are applying for.
What You Can Study in China
This scholarship allows students to study different levels of education which includes:
1. Bachelor’s Degree (Undergraduate)
2. Master’s Degree (Postgraduate)
3. PhD (Doctorate)
4. Non-degree Chinese Language programmes
5. General and Senior Scholar research programmes
Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for this scholarship, here are the following requirements:
1. You must be a South African citizen.
2. Be mentally and physically healthy
3. Have at least 60% average in their latest school results or qualification.
4. Meet the required age limit and correct qualification for the programme they want.
5. Meet language requirements, especially if the course is taught in Mandarin.
Important Language Requirements
1. HSK Level 3
For Chinese-taught undergraduate, general scholar, and senior scholar programmes.
2. HSK Level 4
For Chinese-taught Master’s and PhD programmes.
3. CSCA Assessment
Required for Bachelor’s degree applicants
Priority Fields of Study
You can apply for many courses, but the scholarship focuses more on critical and developmental fields such as:
1. Agriculture, Food Science and Biotechnology
2. Engineering, Computer Science and ICT
3. Environment, Climate Change and Water Studies
4. Nuclear and Renewable Energy
5. Marine and Maritime Studies
6. Natural and Physical Sciences
7. Space Science and Technology
8. Telecommunication
9. Chinese Language Studies
What the Chinese Government Will Cover
Selected students will enjoy full sponsorship that includes:
1. 100% free tuition fee
2. Free university dormitory or accommodation allowance
3. Monthly living allowance.
4. Comprehensive medical insurance.
